Wind Mitigation Inspection

A wind mitigation inspection is a standardized multiple-question assessment in Florida, introduced after the 2004 hurricane season and updated in 2026. Its purpose is to identify homes with features that enhance protection against high-wind events, such as hurricanes, allowing homeowners to qualify for insurance discounts.

Frequently asked questions

How much money will I save on my home insurance?

The potential savings on home insurance can vary widely based on your home’s features. To determine what discounts you qualify for and estimate your savings, it’s best to consult your insurance agent. Home inspectors can assess and report on your home’s wind-resistant features, but they cannot provide specific savings estimates.

A wind mitigation inspection typically takes between 30 minutes to an hour. During the inspection, the home inspector will assess your property by walking around the exterior, inspecting the attic, and examining all openings to evaluate wind-resistant features.

The primary inspection report and reports for any added services (excluding environmental testing) will be completed and sent to you on the same day as the inspection. Usually reports are sent out between 5pm-8pm and will be accessible as soon as the inspection agreement is signed and payment has been made. Reports for indoor air quality tests and radon tests take 48-72 hours to receive from the lab that the tests are sent to for analysis.

In rare cases, homeowners may lose insurance discounts due to errors in a previous wind mitigation inspection. This typically occurs when an inspector incorrectly documented certain home features that were not actually present. However, such instances are uncommon, and most homeowners benefit from annual savings on their insurance premiums.
